Ayodhya is undergoing the most ambitious transformation in its modern history. Following the consecration of the Ram Mandir in January 2024, the central and state governments have invested heavily in upgrading the city’s infrastructure to receive millions of pilgrims each year. TIME-SENSITIVE: Infrastructure details below reflect the situation as of early 2024 — confirm current status before planning a visit.
New Airport
Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya (IXA) opened in November 2023 — the first international airport in the Faizabad division. TIME-SENSITIVE: Route information changes; check current operators and schedules directly. The terminal building is designed in temple-inspired architecture, featuring lotus motifs and warm stone colours. Located approximately 6 km from the city centre. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available at the airport for onward travel.
Ram Path — The Pilgrim Boulevard
Ram Path (formerly Faizabad Road) is a wide, tree-lined boulevard developed to connect the railway station to the Ram Mandir area. The 13-km stretch was widened and beautified with murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana, and lined with shops and dharamshalas for pilgrims.
Sarayu Riverfront Development
The Sarayu riverfront has been redeveloped into a large ghats complex with stone steps, lighting, and seating for pilgrims bathing in the sacred river. A solar-powered boat service allows pilgrims to take a river cruise and view the city from the water. TIME-SENSITIVE: Confirm boat service availability and hours locally before visiting.
Deepotsav — Diwali on the Sarayu
Every year on Diwali, Ayodhya hosts Deepotsav — the lighting of lakhs of diyas along the Sarayu ghats. The event has in recent years broken Guinness World Records for the largest display of simultaneously lit lamps. VERIFY: The specific record figure (22 lakh / 2.2 million diyas) was cited for a recent year; the count increases annually. The entire riverfront is turned into a river of light. Book accommodation months in advance if visiting during Deepotsav — the city fills completely.
