Among the many remarkable stories involving Lord Hanuman, his encounter with Shani Dev (Saturn) is one of the most beloved. It explains why worshipping Hanuman on Saturdays helps devotees overcome Saturn’s effects — a tradition rooted in this traditional narrative.
Note: The story of Hanuman and Shani Dev is a traditional account found in devotional literature and oral tradition. It is not drawn from the main Valmiki Ramayana. The astrological claims about Saturn’s effects are traditional beliefs within Hindu jyotish (astrology), not universal facts. FLAG: Primary source identification for this narrative requires verification.
The Story
Ravana had conquered all the nine planets (Navagrahas) and imprisoned them in his dungeon. Shani Dev was forced to lie face downward — his gaze directed into the earth rather than affecting people or Ravana himself.
When Hanuman set Lanka ablaze, he also freed the prisoners, including Shani Dev. Grateful but still compelled by his nature, Shani Dev began to cast his gaze on Hanuman — which would have brought seven-and-a-half years of hardship.
Hanuman, amused, allowed Shani to land on his shoulder. Shani began pressing down with full force. Hanuman simply expanded his body to enormous proportions, crushing Shani between his muscles and the dungeon ceiling. Shani cried out in pain and begged for mercy.
Hanuman, ever compassionate, immediately released him. Shani Dev, grateful and humbled, made a solemn vow: “I vow that I shall never trouble your devotees. Whoever worships you on Saturdays shall be protected from my malefic influence.”
The Devotional Significance
This story is the traditional origin of Saturday Hanuman worship. The following are traditional beliefs within Hindu devotional practice:
- Saturday (Shanivar) is Hanuman’s second most important day of worship after Tuesday
- Devotees experiencing Shani Sade Sati (the 7.5-year Saturn cycle) or Shani Dhaiya (the 2.5-year cycle) worship Hanuman every Saturday as a protective practice
- Offering sindoor to Hanuman on Saturdays is believed to neutralise Saturn’s harsh effects
