In Vedic astrology, Lord Hanuman is associated with two of the most feared planetary influences: Shani (Saturn) and Mangal (Mars). Devotion to Hanuman is considered one of the most widely practised astrological remedies in North and South Indian traditions. TRADITIONAL/BELIEF: The claims on this page about planetary protection are part of traditional astrological and devotional practice — they represent sincere religious beliefs, not scientifically verifiable causal claims.

Hanuman and Shani (Saturn)

The devotional story that underpins Hanuman’s protective power over Saturn is told in the context of the Ramayana: Shani (Saturn) was imprisoned in Ravana’s palace in Lanka, kept captive after Ravana had defeated him in a celestial battle. When Hanuman came to Lanka searching for Sita, he found Shani imprisoned and freed him. In gratitude, Shani promised: “Whoever worships you, Hanuman, I will not afflict with my malefic effects. I will release them from the burden of Shani dasha and Sade Sati.”

SOURCE NEEDED: This story is told in popular Hanuman devotional literature and oral tradition. Its appearance in earlier canonical texts has not been identified in the existing content — it may derive from post-Valmiki devotional traditions.

This is why Saturday — Shani’s day — is considered the second most important day for Hanuman worship after Tuesday. The traditional Saturday practice for those undergoing Sade Sati or Shani Dasha:

  • Visit a Hanuman temple on Saturday
  • Light a mustard-oil lamp before Hanuman’s idol
  • Recite the Hanuman Chalisa
  • For Sade Sati specifically: continue the practice for the duration of the transit, especially during peak periods

Hanuman and Mangal (Mars)

Hanuman was born on a Tuesday, the day ruled by Mangal (Mars). He shares Mars’s qualities — fire, energy, courage, physical strength, and the drive to overcome obstacles. For those with afflicted Mars in their horoscope (Mangal Dosha), Hanuman worship on Tuesdays is the most widely recommended astrological remedy in North Indian tradition. TRADITIONAL/BELIEF

Mangal Dosha is said in Jyotisha (Vedic astrology) to cause difficulties in marriage and partnerships when Mars occupies certain houses in the natal chart. Observing the Mangalvar Vrat (Tuesday fast) for 11 or more consecutive Tuesdays is the most commonly prescribed traditional remedy.

Astrological Remedies — Summary

  • Daily Hanuman Chalisa recitation — General planetary protection; the most accessible practice
  • Tuesday fast (Mangalvar Vrat) — For Mars-related issues, Mangal Dosha, or general Hanuman devotion
  • Saturday mustard-oil lamp in Hanuman temple — Specifically for Sade Sati (7.5-year Saturn transit) and Shani Dasha
  • Bajrang Baan — Invoked in times of acute difficulty or crisis when multiple planets are afflicted
  • Hanuman Chalisa 108 times on Hanuman Jayanti — Considered the most powerful annual remedy in this tradition

A Note on Astrology and Devotion

These practices are rooted in centuries of devotional tradition. For those who observe them, the astrological framework is a way of understanding Hanuman’s power within the larger cosmic order — not a mechanical transaction. Hanuman’s blessings are understood to arise from sincere devotion, not from correct procedure alone.
