Most people associate Hanuman exclusively with the Ramayana. Yet Hanuman also plays a memorable role in the Mahabharata — appearing to both Bhima and Arjuna during the Pandavas’ exile. As a chiranjeevi (immortal), Hanuman was present in the age of Krishna as well as the age of Ram.
Hanuman and Bhima — Brothers in Spirit
Both Hanuman and Bhima are sons of Vayudeva, the wind god — making them divine brothers. During the Pandavas’ 12-year forest exile, Bhima was travelling through the forests of Gandhamadana searching for the Saugandhika flower for Draupadi. He encountered an old monkey lying across the forest path, its tail blocking the way.
Bhima, proud of his own strength, asked the monkey to move its tail. The monkey said he was too old and tired to move, and suggested Bhima simply lift the tail himself.
Bhima grabbed the tail with all his enormous strength — and could not move it even slightly. Bhima’s pride was instantly humbled.
The old monkey then revealed himself as Hanuman. The brothers embraced with joy. Hanuman blessed Bhima and gave him profound wisdom: “Real strength is strength in the service of righteousness. I am always present where Ram is remembered.”
Hanuman on Arjuna’s Chariot Flag
When the great Kurukshetra war approached, Lord Krishna was Arjuna’s charioteer. Hanuman had promised Arjuna that he would sit on his chariot flag and protect the chariot during the great battle. Hanuman sat on the flag in a small, invisible form throughout the 18-day war.
As a result, despite the devastating weapons directed at the chariot, it remained undamaged throughout the entire war. This is why the Hanuman dhwaja (flag bearing Hanuman’s image) is considered extremely protective — a tradition carried into temples and homes today.
Why These Stories Matter
Hanuman’s presence in the Mahabharata confirms his status as a chiranjeevi — an immortal being who transcends the ages. The same Hanuman who served Ram in the Treta Yuga was present in the Dvapara Yuga to serve Arjuna and Bhima. He is present in our own age too, available to any sincere devotee who calls upon him.
