Beyond temples and rituals, Ayodhya has a vibrant community life built around seva (service), pilgrimage support, and cultural activity. TIME-SENSITIVE: Organisations, programmes, and schedules mentioned here are subject to change — verify current availability locally before planning around any specific service.

Free Langar and Anna Daan

Several organisations in Ayodhya operate free meal services (langar / anna kshetra) for pilgrims. The most active operations are near Hanuman Garhi and the Ram Mandir entry points. No identity required — any pilgrim in need can walk in and eat. Major temples also serve free prasad meals on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and on festival days.

Volunteer Seva at Temples

The Ram Mandir Trust and Hanuman Garhi both accept volunteers for seva activities — flower decoration, crowd management, prasad distribution, and cleaning. Interested devotees can contact the respective temple offices directly. TIME-SENSITIVE: Seva arrangements change; contact the temples for current volunteering process. Seva performed in Ayodhya, one of the seven most sacred cities in Hinduism (Saptapuri), is held in high devotional regard.

Ram Katha Programmes

Katha (storytelling/discourse) programmes on the Ramayana and Hanuman’s story are held regularly throughout the year in Ayodhya — in open mandaps, in temples, and in community halls. Local and national kathavachaks (storytellers) come to Ayodhya and draw large audiences. TIME-SENSITIVE: Programmes are not centrally advertised; check with the Ayodhya temple board or local announcements for the current schedule.

Sarayu Aarti

Every evening, an aarti ceremony — modelled on Varanasi’s Ganga Aarti — is held at the Sarayu ghats with lamps, conch shells, music, and the recitation of Ram’s name. The ceremony has grown substantially since the Ram Mandir opening and draws hundreds of visitors nightly. Free to attend.

Pilgrimage Support Organisations

TIME-SENSITIVE: Organisations and their services change; verify current operations locally.

  • VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad): Operates pilgrim information counters near the Ram Mandir
  • Seva Bharati: Free medical camps during major festivals
  • Local trust offices: Can assist with dharamshala bookings and free meal passes for large pilgrimage groups
